Product that protects skin from sunlight
Sunscreen is a type of skincare product that helps protect your skin from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, which can damage or cause skin cancer. It also helps prevent premature skin aging. Sunscreen has had a huge impact on this market, causing the sunscreen cosmetics market to grow continuously, with new brands constantly emerging to meet consumer demand based on Thai skin types and climate conditions. This has resulted in steadily increasing consumer purchases and high value for the sunscreen product category.
Learn about the types of sunscreen before creating your own brand
For the best sunscreens, whether face or body formulas, they may have different properties depending on the type and texture of the sunscreen. This is a subtle detail that most people don’t pay much attention to, even though choosing the wrong type that doesn’t meet your needs could lead to much worse results. Today we will take an in-depth look at the types of sunscreen to gain a proper understanding. Basically, sunscreens can be divided into 2 main types:
- Chemical sunscreens
Chemical sunscreens use chemicals as the main ingredients to prevent sun exposure by using chemicals to prevent the penetration of sunlight through the skin. The chemicals used in chemical sunscreens can be chosen from a variety of types, such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. These chemicals provide good heat dissipation and effectiveness in sun protection.
- Physical sunscreens
Physical sunscreens use natural light-filtering substances such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. When applied on the skin, they accumulate sunlight and reflect it back, preventing the sunlight from reaching the skin. They also have the ability to protect the skin from UVA and UVB radiation. In addition, development has improved physical sunscreens to blend with skin tones much better, avoiding large white or gray marks on the face after use.
Therefore, choosing a sunscreen should take into account skin suitability and usage to provide good sun protection. The product must protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.
Choosing the right one for the face and body
Choosing sunscreens for the face and body requires considering various factors such as skin type, environment, daily activities, etc.
- Sunscreen for the face should be chosen according to skin type, such as oily, dry or combination skin. Face-specific formulas are essential because facial skin is much thinner and more sensitive than other areas. Direct impact on confidence if irritation occurs. Moreover, the delicate nature of facial skin means it is more prone to sun damage. Therefore, sunscreen should be applied to the face every time before leaving the house, and ideally 15-20 minutes beforehand for maximum protection.
- Sunscreen for the body can be chosen according to individual preferences and needs. For example, if exercising or staying outdoors all day, waterproof or gel formulas that won’t feel sticky and can be reapplied every 2-3 hours are preferable. Also, sunscreen types should not be used interchangeably. Body sunscreen should not be applied to the face because facial skin is much thinner and may be irritated by ingredients intended for thicker body skin. The sunscreen chosen must contain ingredients suitable for the face and avoid potential irritants.
Types of sunscreen by texture
There are many types of sunscreen products available. Each one caters to different user needs and preferences. The main ones can be categorized into 6 types:
1. Cream sunscreens have a lightweight, creamy texture to protect the face from sunlight and UV radiation, which are the main causes of facial skin damage that can lead to skin diseases later on. Cream sunscreens have SPF levels ranging from 15 to 50, where higher SPF means greater sun protection efficacy. Best suited for people with dry skin since moisturizing properties are often added. Suitable for daily use.
2. Gel sunscreens are sunscreens with a gel-like texture consisting of water and cream. They are light and non-greasy, suitable for oily, acne-prone skin that produces excessive oil. Gel sunscreens tend to appear translucent. Some brands also add plant extracts that benefit the skin to keep it fresh and bright while protecting from the sun. Gel sunscreens feel cool and refreshing on the skin but need frequent reapplication.
3. Spray sunscreens are more modern and convenient formulas designed for easy portability and use. This allows flexible use according to individual needs and preferences. However, it should be noted that spray sunscreens do not protect the skin as well as other types of sunscreen. Still, spray sunscreens remain a good option for those who prioritize convenience and have non-sensitive skin.
4. Milk sunscreens are gentle, lightweight sunscreens that are easy to use and non-irritating. The water and oil content allows them to be applied frequently without causing dryness or reactions. Milk sunscreens also provide moisture to the skin.
5. Stick sunscreens come in stick form and contain sun filtering ingredients that are applied directly onto the skin or body areas. Convenient and easy to use, but need thorough application over all exposed areas. Should be used together with a facial moisturizer. Commonly seen for sports or prolonged outdoor activities.
6. Tinted sunscreens provide dual properties of sun protection and tone evening in one product, which has gained steady popularity over the past few years. Allows using makeup products that also protect the face from sunlight, and is suitable for times when there is insufficient time for full makeup application. Therefore, tinted sunscreens are high value products and rank among the best-selling cosmetics in Thailand.
Factors in the growth of the market
The sunscreen market is a product that will likely continue growing in the future, especially in Thailand’s hot climate with year-round strong sunlight. Using proper sunscreen is very important to protect the face from the sun’s effects such as wrinkles, dull skin, and various skin diseases.
Choosing suitable sunscreen depends on skin type, age, and condition. Natural, non-toxic sunscreens are highly popular. In addition, there is a trend towards sunscreens using natural plant extracts that have antioxidant properties to keep the skin looking youthful. Emphasis is also placed on developing higher efficiency sunscreens to better protect the skin, especially among consumers who value quality products.
